What a cookie is doing here at all

This site sets no cookie of its own. The cookies come from two places. Google Analytics tells one visit apart from the next, so a page opened twice is not counted as two people, and it stays on this site.

The Meta pixel is the other, and it is different in kind: it reports your visit to Facebook and Instagram so we can measure our own advertising and reach people who resemble our visitors. That one does follow you off this site, and it is advertising. It was added on 8 Sep 2026, and until then the sentence here said nothing on this site was used for advertising. The single switch below turns off both.

Every cookie this site can set

_ga: Google Analytics. Distinguishes one browser from another so repeat visits are not counted as new people. Expires 2 years after it is set or last updated.
_ga_GX52GREP0V: Google Analytics. Holds the state of the current session for this specific property. Expires 2 years after it is set or last updated.
_fbp: Meta. The identifier Facebook and Instagram use to recognise this browser across sites, which is what makes our advertising measurable. Expires 90 days after it is set or last updated.
_fbc: Meta. Set only if you arrived here by clicking one of our Facebook or Instagram ads, and it records which ad that was. If you have never clicked one, it is never set. Expires 90 days after it is set or last updated.
_GRECAPTCHA: Google reCAPTCHA. Set when you use one of our forms, so Google can tell us whether the submission came from a person or a script. Expires 6 months after it is set.

That is the complete list. If you turn measurement off, none of the measurement cookies is ever set and any copy already in your browser is deleted. _GRECAPTCHA is the one exception, and deliberately so: it is not measurement, it is what keeps our contact form from being filled in by scripts, so it is set when you use a form whichever way you have answered. It is never used to measure you and never used to advertise to you.

Two things that are not cookies

Your choice itself is stored in your browser’s local storage under genesis98:cookie-consent. It is not a cookie, it is never sent to us, and we cannot read it. It exists so the site remembers your answer instead of asking on every page. Clearing your browser data clears it, and you will be asked again.

The home page plays a short opening animation the first time you arrive, and not again for a day. The time it last played is stored in the same place under g98:entrance-seen. It is a timestamp and nothing else: not an identifier, never sent to us, and unrelated to measurement or advertising. Turning measurement off does not remove it, because it is not measuring anything; clearing your browser data does.

Opt-out, not opt-in, and why

This site is available in the United States only, and US privacy law works on an opt-out basis for analytics: measurement runs unless you refuse it. That is why the notice at the bottom of the page is a notice rather than a wall, and why it does not block you from reading anything.

We are not being casual about it. A blocking consent modal on one of our client sites removed most of that site’s measured traffic within weeks, and bought no additional protection under the only law that reached it. A clear, permanent, one-press opt-out is the better trade for everyone.

If you are outside the United States

Requests from outside the US are refused before a page is served, so this policy is unlikely to reach you. If you have reached the site some other way and want the GDPR or UK GDPR treatment, say so and you will get it.

Turning cookies off in the browser instead

Every major browser can block or delete cookies for a specific site, and that works here too. It is a blunter instrument than the control above. it will affect other sites and it can break ones that need cookies to log you in, but it is entirely your call.
